What private label and OEM coffee mean
Private label coffee is sold under a brand or retailer’s own name, even though someone else makes it. OEM (original equipment manufacturer) coffee is made to another company’s specification, usually for resale under that company’s brand. In both cases, the brand decides the blend, roast level, flavour and packaging, and a roaster executes it. This guide covers the green coffee side. For roasting basics see the roasting guide.
Who is involved, and where Scofi fits
| Party | Role |
|---|---|
| Brand or retailer | Defines the product, brand, price and customers |
| Roaster (own or contract) | Roasts, blends, packs and labels to the specification |
| Green coffee supplier | Provides unroasted beans that meet the specification |
Scofi is the green coffee supplier. We supply unroasted Arabica and Robusta, depending on availability, to roasters and roasteries, including contract roasters working for brands. We do not sell roasted private label coffee ourselves. If you do not yet have a roaster, see how to start a coffee roastery in Malaysia or ask roasters you trust.
Start with the product brief
Before sourcing, decide:
- Product type: whole bean, ground, instant, premix or capsule-ready coffee.
- Flavour target: sweet and milky, bold and bitter, fruity, or traditional kopi.
- Roast level and brew method: espresso, filter or kopi. See espresso roast vs filter roast.
- Price point and margin.
- Volume per month and launch plan.
- Any claims: origin, certifications, halal or organic. Check rules for claims with the relevant authorities.
See Malaysia market trends to size the opportunity.
Designing the blend
Most private label products are blends, because blends can be tuned for taste, cost and consistency. Build them from roles: a base for sweetness and body, a lift for acidity, and optional Robusta for crema or strength. Decide whether the roaster blends before or after roasting. See pre-roast vs post-roast blending, espresso Arabica and Arabica vs Robusta.
Locking the green coffee specification
A written spec stops quality drifting between batches.
| Item | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Species, origin and process | Flavour direction. See processing methods |
| Grade and maximum defects | Cleanliness and sorting loss. See Grade 1 vs EK-1 |
| Moisture range | Roast behaviour and storage. See moisture levels |
| Bean size | Even roasting |
| Cup profile and score | Flavour match |
| Packaging and net weight | Handling and freshness. See packaging options |
| Crop and delivery timing | Freshness and planning |
Keep a sealed reference sample of each approved lot and compare every delivery against it.
Consistency and supply continuity
Brands live or die on batch-to-batch consistency. Plan for:
- Repeat lots and replacements: what happens when a lot runs out or the crop changes.
- Reference samples and blind cupping against the approved profile.
- Stock planning so the roaster is never short.
- Documentation: lot numbers and records for traceability. See quality control.
Costing a private label coffee
Work out the true cost per roasted kilogram: green price, roast loss (commonly 12–20%), blending, packaging, labelling, freight, labour and margin. See green coffee price guide and Indonesia Robusta price in Malaysia.
Timeline, MOQ and next steps
Typical stages are brief, samples, blend trials, spec approval, a pilot batch, packaging approval and launch. Minimum quantities and lead times depend on the lot, the roaster and the packaging. Ask early, and run a pilot batch before a full launch. See wholesale supplier, green coffee sample packs and how to buy.
