Both countries supply Robusta (Coffea canephora) for espresso blends, milk drinks, traditional coffee and instant coffee, and both are close to Malaysia. Regions and production
- Indonesia: Lampung, South Sumatra and Bengkulu on Sumatra, plus East and Central Java and smaller areas. Many smallholders feed the supply chain, so lot quality varies. See Sumatra vs Lampung.
- Vietnam: the Central Highlands, including Đắk Lắk, Đắk Nông, Gia Lai, Lâm Đồng and Kon Tum.
Both countries produce commercial Robusta and some carefully processed fine Robusta.
Processing and consistency
Indonesia uses natural, dry-hulled, some wet-hulled, washed and honey methods, which gives a wide range of profiles. Vietnam’s lots range from high-volume commercial processing to selectively harvested, fermentation-controlled coffee. In both, ask about picking, drying, sorting and grade, and keep an approved reference sample. See processing methods and Grade 1 vs EK-1.
Which should you choose?
| Your goal | Consider | Why |
|---|---|---|

| Espresso blend with Arabica | Test both | Blend ratio and roast change the result. See Arabica vs Robusta |
| Instant, premix, 3-in-1 | Test both on yield and cost | See Robusta for instant coffee |
| Supply continuity | Consider both origins | A second approved origin reduces risk |
